Land Acknowledgement:

‍As a new Canadian, I acknowledge that my practice on Roncesvalles Avenue is situated on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples, and is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities today.

I recognize that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and is subject to the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant—an ancient peace agreement to bound Nations to share and protect the land and resources around the Great Lakes.

‍To me, honouring the true inheritors of the land goes beyond a generic land acknowledgement disclaimer. To do my part, I made it my responsibility to learn about the Indigenous presence in my neighbourhood, today. Roncesvalles Avenue itself sits on land with deep, specific Indigenous history. The area bordering High Park historically formed the eastern boundary of a vast, carefully stewarded Black Oak Savannah nurtured through land-based fire practices by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Roncesvalles lies alongside ancient trail systems—such as nearby Indian Road—that connected Lake Ontario to northern trade and travel routes long before European settlement.

‍Today, Toronto’s West End continues to house vital Indigenous health, social, and cultural organizations that serve, heal, and empower urban First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, including:

  • Anishnawbe Nibi Gitigan: An Indigenous-led community medicine garden in Parkdale dedicated to urban land reclamation, traditional plant medicine, and ecological stewardship.

  • Niiwin Wendaanimak (Four Winds): An Indigenous Health and Wellness program delivering primary healthcare, land-based healing, and Elder-led support through the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre.

  • Native Child and Family Services of Toronto (NCFST): Providing culture-based early years, youth, and family well-being programming through West-End hubs.

  • Pedahbun Lodge's Community Legacy: Honouring the West End's legacy as the birthplace of Toronto's first urban Indigenous residential recovery centre established in Parkdale in the 1970s.

  • Craft Ontario Shop & Gallery: Dedicated to elevating First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists by showcasing ethically sourced works, jewelry, and prints.

  • Another Story Bookshop: A long-standing Roncesvalles community space prioritizing Indigenous authors, literature, and storytelling.

‍ ‍

I express my gratitude to the original caretakers of this land and commit to taking meaningful responsibility for my presence here in the spirit of respect and solidarity.
